On my desk : Pennie Pengilly

The best fitted out kitchen

My working day tends to be busy, very busy, starting very early, sometimes 5 o’clock in the morning when we have a large event to cater for and ending, well it ends when the work is completed.

Making twenty plus large cakes in a day takes structure, patience and organisation. Some days when you have rush orders on can be hectic and exhausting but totally worthwhile when you receive amazing compliments from people.

I don’t have a desk as such I have a kitchen: a small but perfectly formed space where everything is easy to hand and to reach, a little like working on a yacht. No space is wasted, everything in the kitchen has to earn its keep!

When not making cakes, canapés or yumminess for dinner parties and weddings I am testing new recipes or trying new combinations of flavours to be able to always offer new and inspirational ideas for my customers. Visiting suppliers and researching on the internet also takes up a large amount of my time.

I really don’t think I could live without my Kitchen Aid, it is my power horse, my favourite machine, gadget, and it really does take the pressure off, whether making cakes, pasta or juicing. I would be totally lost without it. My sisters and brother bought it for me for my 40th so it also holds personal memories for me too.

Music as well is the ‘thing’ that keeps me going when I am doing an 18 hour day. The playlist varies from the Dub Pistols to Marvin Gaye to Prokofiev. The music is constantly on shuffle; something to do with the beat and the rhythm.

I love my work, you couldn’t do this job unless you loved it.
