More than musical accompaniment
My working day tends to be so varied! I freelance graphic design in between playing and writing music – so usually I’ll be at my computer, then on the lounge songwriting, then out at a pub playing that night. All in all, my day is a whirl of creativity from start to finish.
So I can’t get by without my Cole Clarke guitar because it inspires me to chase my dreams, work hard and never stop creating!
The best thing about it is it sounds fantastic amplified, and produces lovely tones. It’s also become instrumental in my songwriting process. For example, in my latest single “Me and Jack”, I really wanted to create a song with a lot of double meanings on love and whisky drinking; in particular play on the figure of “Jack” – a symbol standing for the blurred reality between relationships and alcohol dependence. I wrote this song in Nashville with Byron Hill, and once we had this concept constructed, we started playing around with guitar melodies that mimicked the clinking glasses in a crowded bar, while ensuring the melody suited the dark ballad that we wanted to produce.
Originally I started purely writing lyrics, but now I’m really enjoying exploring chord progressions and melodies on the guitar – working out how words fit to music, and creating music that resonates with listeners.
I wouldn’t give it up for a good cup of coffee. Although sometimes I’ve gone close.
